Chapter 10

“Flying is incredibly dull,” Christopher said to Janet the next afternoon as they made their way across the Atlantic. “I thought it would be better in first class, but it’s still just boring.”

Janet nodded. “But at least you have room to stretch out while you’re bored.”

“That’s very true,” Christopher agreed. “I have long legs, and I never have enough space in economy.”

“I can’t imagine Mr. Jones flying economy,” Janet said.

“When I travel with Mr. Jones, we nearly always take a private plane,” Christopher told her. “Actually, I don’t believe I’ve ever flown commercial with him.”

“My very first assignment after training was undercover as the spoiled only child of a very wealthy man,” Edward interjected. “Of course, that meant flying first class, and I’m afraid it ruined me forever after. I can’t imagine flying any other way.”

“I’m still bored,” Christopher replied.

Janet laughed. “Tell me about your first assignment after training,” she suggested. “Did you work in the field for a while before you went to work for Mr. Jones?”

“I don’t think I’m meant to talk about any of that,” he replied apologetically. “I don’t suppose you’d care to share what that message from George actually said.”

Edward shrugged. “I decoded it for you.”

“You did, and I was grateful because, as I said, I’m not good with codes. I believe I also mentioned that Mr. Jones has a team working to decode it further. He suspects that there’s another message hidden behind the first one.”

“I wish him and his team good luck in finding it,” Edward replied.

Christopher stared at him for a moment. “We could keep you safer if we knew what was really happening. We’ve already agreed to let you meet George on your terms.”

“Janet has never had any training in what we do. Do you think she should take a few classes to supplement her knowledge?” Edward asked.

“I think she’s doing wonderfully well without any training, but I’m fairly certain Mr. Jones would agree to allowing her to take a course or two if she was interested. No doubt he’d try to persuade you to teach a course or two while Janet was busy elsewhere,” Christopher replied.

“I’ve no interest in teaching,” Edward told him. “I might be persuaded to sit down and chat with a group of trainees about my various experiences, but I suspect Mr. Jones would want me to edit out all of the times that I didn’t do exactly what I was told to do, wouldn’t he?”

Christopher laughed. “Some of your stories are already legends within the agency, and everyone knows that you rarely follow the orders you’re given. If you hadn’t always achieved such wonderful results, your behaviour probably would have ended your career.”

“We were taught from the very beginning that events in the field can overtake orders and that we should always use our knowledge and experience to make smart decisions as we work through our assignments. That’s all I’ve ever done.”

Some hours later, after meals and drinks and a great deal more conversation about nothing much, the plane finally landed in Toronto.
